the term was developed by a pseudo-scientist named Samuel A. Cartwright, who attempted to pathologize an enslaved American's desire for freedom from captivity, as a mental illness.

in naming this piece, i attempt to hold the gaze of American tradition against a tapestry of the American experience. in doing so, i find many a dilemma; in this image, the dilemma of citizens who hold onto their sanity in world diluted by the deluded themselves.
